Fall might be our favorite season to get dressed for. You can finally start layering again, pull the denim back into regular rotation and add a great shoe or bag that completely changes a look.
But we’ve also learned that we don’t need an entirely new wardrobe every September. We’d much rather have a handful of essential fall pieces that we genuinely love wearing and can mix with what we already own. These are the pieces that are doing the heavy lifting in our closets right now.
A Pretty White Blouse
A white blouse is one of those pieces we always come back to, but we love one with a little personality. Lace, eyelet, embroidery or a pretty collar makes jeans feel much more pulled together while still keeping the outfit easy and wearable.
A Casual Cardigan
We’re loving cardigans worn as tops instead of always treating them as a layering piece. This brown one with the sweet collar and tiny print feels very fall, and all it really needs is a great pair of wide-leg jeans, sneakers and a tote.
A Really Good Bag
Sometimes the accessory is what makes the whole outfit. A bag in warm brown, suede, leather or canvas works with practically every fall color and can make even jeans and a sweater feel a little more special
A Black Turtleneck
There are very few things a simple black turtleneck can’t work with. Wear it with jeans now, then layer it under blazers, jackets, vests and coats once the temperatures drop. This is exactly the kind of basic we want in more than one drawer.
Wide-Leg Denim
If we had to choose one denim silhouette for fall, a great wide leg would be very high on the list. We love the shape with everything from feminine blouses to fitted sweaters, and changing the shoes can take them from casual daytime to dinner.
A Short-Sleeve Cardigan
This is such a good piece for that awkward stretch when we’re ready to dress for fall but the weather hasn’t gotten the memo. Wear it alone now with a skirt or denim, then bring it back later underneath a jacket. We love pieces that don’t have to be packed away after a few weeks.
Fall Shoes
Fall shoes are where we really have fun. Suede loafers, Mary Janes, leopard sneakers, flats and easy slip-ons can completely change the personality of the same pair of jeans. Give us a comfortable shoe with a little something interesting and we’re sold.
Polka Dots
We will always have room for a good print, and polka dots are especially easy to wear. A midi skirt with a simple knit and heels is an easy dinner look, but we’d also wear it with flats, loafers or even a sweater and sneakers for something more casual.
A Fall Closet Staple
This is one of those dresses we’ll reach for over and over this fall. The chocolate brown feels so rich for the season, and we love that it can easily go from dinner with heels to a more casual day with boots.
At this point, we know our closets well enough to know what earns its space. We want clothes that are comfortable, flattering, current and, most importantly, things we’ll actually reach for on a random Tuesday.
That’s really our test for the best essential fall pieces. Can we wear them multiple ways? Do they work with things we already own? And do we feel good when we put them on? If the answer is yes, they’re coming home with us.
Stay stylish,
Tiffany & Tegan
